The John Thurman Historical Society was first formed in the early 1960s to discover and collect, preserve and protect the history of the Town of Thurman.

This group was very energetic, and served the community for nearly two decades before age and illness made the most active members unable to continue participating. After over a decade of dormancy, the society was revived by residents who had been inspired by the resurgence of interest in local history that accompanied the celebration of Thurman's bicentennial. The new group eventually was awarded a provisional charter by the New York State Education Department, and achieved 501 (c) (3) status with the Internal Revenue Service soon thereafter. The mission remains the same.

The Quarterly

Every three months the society publishes a new issue of the Quarterly, a magazine with a full-color glossy cover that is full of stories and photographs of Thurman and Thurmanites in bygone days. Read about our current, upcoming and back issues. Annually we publish a community calendar full of wonderful pictures and useful information about Thurman events and meetings. Copies are still available.

The September issue also serves as the guide book for "Tour Thurman: A Guided Jaunt into Homes and History", the annual house tour, which buses guests to in-depth visits at five historic sites in Thurman.
